In 1992, Rachel’s Table was created by members of the Women’s Philanthropy Division of the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts to address food insecurity in the Springfield/Longmeadow area. Since then, Rachel’s Table has grown to serve Hampshire, Hampden, and Franklin Counties, at times extending into Berkshire County and Hartford County (in CT).
Six days per week, more than 200 volunteers collect food from farms, supermarkets, restaurants, caterers and bakeries, and deliver to more than 60 local organizations including food pantries, community meal programs, afterschool centers, shelters, and more.
Rachel's Table serves a unique role in the local food system by flexibly adapting and responding to gaps in the emergency food supply chain, mobilizing volunteers and serving as a bridge between food donors and recipient agencies. We keep food that would otherwise end up in the landfill from slipping through the cracks.
What We Do
Rachel's Table takes a holistic approach to food insecurity through 4 programs that address immediate needs and long-term solutions:
RESCUE: We rescue and deliver food to 60+ partner agencies.
PURCHASE: Several times a year we purchase requested and culturally relevant foods in large quantities for partner agencies.
GLEAN: We work with volunteers to gather surplus produce from local farms and distribute it to partner agencies and community networks.
GROW: We support the clients of partner agencies to plan, plant, and harvest culturally meaningful food for themselves and their communities.
