The Market at Gray House is looking for dedicated volunteers to help sort, pack, and distribute food to support our weekly market distribution! Each week we serve on average 500 households in need of free, nutritious groceries as we continue the fight against food insecuirty in the greater Springfield area. 

Requirements: 

Must be able to lift at least 10 lbs. for sorting and packing, 30 lbs. for distribution or pick-ups
Minimum commitment of 2.5 hours per week between:
Wednesdays: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Thursdays: 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Second and fourth Fridays of the month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred for Thursdays and Fridays, but not required. 

The Money Management Program is a free service that assists low-income, older adults who have difficulty budgeting, paying routine bills, and keeping track of financial matters. All transactions are monitored by GSSSI staff, and the program is fully licensed, bonded, and insured.

The program assists with:

- Individuals whose eyesight makes it difficult to read.

- Individuals living with physical disabilities that make it difficult to write checks.

- Those who cannot perform everyday banking activities due to frailty or disability.

There are three types of Money Management volunteer opportunities:

1. Bill Payers assist by conducting monthly home visits to write help checks, pay bills, and balance the checkbook. The older adult makes all decisions and retains check-signing capacity. The volunteer completes a monthly report recording the amount and type of bills paid, and volunteers and participants are carefully screened and matched.

2. Representative Payees assist by coming into the GSSSI office every month to review the finances of clients for whom Social Security has legally appointed GSSSI as their "Rep Payee." These clients have a special account set up by GSSSI, and volunteers help pay the bills on the clients' behalf. No home visits are required for this role.

3. Volunteer Monitors review the work of the Money Management volunteers by coming into the GSSSI office monthly to check over volunteer reports and compare them to the client's bank statements and canceled checks. No home visits are required for this role.

For more than thirty years families in the hilltowns have received help with gifts for their children through a community project called Hilltown Holiday Help. Children of families with low to moderate income in the hilltowns are eligible to receive clothing, books and toys. This effort is organized by the Hilltown Community Health Centers in conjunction with the National Honor Society with contributions from other organizations and individuals throughout the hilltowns and beyond. This year, we will be distributing gifts on December 10 and 11 from 3-5 PM and will need drivers and runners. Runners will bring gift bags to cars for pick up and drivers will deliver gifts to those unable to pick them up.

Become a Meals on Wheels Driver and help bring smiles and nutritious meals to older adults in your community!  As key team members in our Nutrition Department, you deliver vital nutrition and important safety checks to homebound elders and individuals with disabilities in our communities. Volunteer drivers receive mileage reimbursement and work 1-5 days per week for 1-2 hours per shift, depending on their availability and interest. Be an impartial advocate who visits local nursing home residents weekly, making sure their concerns are heard & addressed. Ombudsman volunteers develop trusting relationships with residents, educate them about their rights, and advocate for their quality of care. They work closely with nursing home staff to resolve disputes and concerns. Ombudsman volunteers receive comprehensive training and certification from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services and supervision and support from Access Care Partners' Ombudsman Director. Outreach volunteers assist with setting up and staffing information tables, distributing Alianza information and responding to questions about services while tabling at community events (i.e. fairs, festivals, outdoor markets). Volunteers also help distribute informational materials to public places, such as doctors’ offices, libraries, schools, businesses, and local service agencies. Volunteers participate in a 1-2 hour training, and are paired with staff when out in the community. Time commitment is flexible and may include weekend days.       

Senior Companion Volunteers provide one-on-one interaction, help ease loneliness, boost self-esteem, solve problems, and build friendships with seniors. Senior Companions Volunteers are active older adults who help others live independently. Senior Companions can also provide support by assisting with grocery shopping, medical appointments, and other daily tasks necessary for maintaining independence. The program also provides respite service by giving primary family caregivers a break. Senior Companions play a vital role in maintaining independence and quality of life for those they serve. This role serves in Chicopee, Holyoke, and soon Springfield and West Springfield.

Action Centered Tutoring Services (ACTS) is seeking volunteer tutors, aged 16 and up, who would like to support the academic, as well as social-emotional learning, of Springfield Elementary students! For high school and college students, this is an excellent (and fun!) way to meet any community service requirements for clubs, honor societies or capstone projects! 

Training and support is provided to our tutors, in the form of training sessions and on-site help from the Site Director. Our tutors work one-on-one with an assigned student to complete homework assignments, strengthen skills in math, reading and writing, and also serve as mentors to their student. The last half-hour of each tutoring session includes "Club Time", where students and tutors participate in games, crafts, reading, and discussions designed to bolster self-esteem, teach empathy, and encourage connection to their community.

To apply to be a tutor, please complete the Volunteer Application and the CORI form (if 18 or older). Please note that you must commit to once a week, for a minimum of 1/2 of the school year, and be able to provide your own transportation to/from the program location. Tutoring sessions are not held during school vacations or in the event of school closures (e.g., snow days).

Intimate partner and domestic violence are a common problem in the United States, affecting an estimated 10 million people every year; as many as one in four women and one in nine men are victims of domestic violence. The Communications & Public Relations Intern supports Alianza’s efforts to raise awareness of domestic and intimate partner violence, and helps to promote Alianza’s programs and services. The intern works on projects that directly impact the public’s understanding of factors contributing to domestic violence, and will gain hands-on experience in policy research, general and targeted communications, and public awareness event planning and coordination.

One of the most rewarding ways to volunteer is to make a Dinner meal for the Residents in the Men's New Life Rehabilitation Program (25-30 men) at 10 Mill St. or the Emergency Men’s Overnight Shelter at 148 Taylor St. (20-25 men). Both facilities are sober living. This is a tremendous help to the Rescue Mission and provides respite for the SRM Food Service kitchen crew.

 Meals can range from pizza and grinders, to casserole dishes, spaghetti and meatballs, cold-cut sandwiches, chicken dishes, rice dishes, burgers and dogs, sloppy joes, stuffed baked potatoes and everything in between. (Side dishes and salads are always appreciated. Dessert is optional.)

Some provide a meal on a regular weekly or monthly basis and others do so as schedules permit. Even one time is a blessing to the Rescue Mission!

The following are options for providing a Dinner:

Dinner is served promptly at 5:00 pm at both facilities.

Dinner Providers should complete a Gift in Kind (GIK) form at the reception desk when providing a meal. This is your tax deduction form and is used for the Rescue Mission’s tax purposes as well. Dinner Providers must contact Volunteer Coordinator for scheduling:

Four times a month, food is distributed by NNCC staff and volunteers to anyone that shows up to the food bank. Twice in Memorial Square and twice in Brightwood. These are the two neighborhoods that make up the North End of the City of Springfield.

This is great for groups or families! The shift is 10-12pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month and 12:30-2:30pm on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. We can take youth 16 and up! Contact:

Help us read applications for our Business Accelerator & Pitch Contests!  One way that we are able to ensure fairness and balance among Pitch Contest and Accelerator applicants is by having individuals volunteer their time to review and score applications from entrepreneurs. Constructive feedback to early-stage entrepreneurs is critical to their growth and overall success. This is done remotely, time commitment is flexible, and offered several times per year. This is a great way to plug into the creative energy of the community.  English and Spanish speakers are always needed.

Mentors play a critical role in the EforAll Business Accelerator program, providing ongoing support and encouragement to an aspiring entrepreneur looking to start a business. Mentors get the opportunity to utilize their knowledge and professional experience as part of a dedicated mentor team during this year-long program.

Accelerator Mentors are volunteers from various backgrounds and use their business and leadership experience to guide new entrepreneurs through the process of turning their idea into a growing business. You do not have to be a business owner to be a mentor.

Mentors work in teams of two and are matched with an entrepreneur based on schedule availability and desire to work together. The team meets as a group, often virtually, to help reaffirm topics and themes raised during classes while strategizing with the entrepreneur on reaching their specific goals during the program.

This role is great for anyone looking for a highly rewarding and fun volunteer experience who can dedicate the time needed to help someone pursue their business dream.

Want to give to an organization but maybe do not have the time or are not the right age to volunteer with them yet? A great way to utilize your skills and still make a contribution is to host a fundraiser of your choice and donate to an agency! You and some friends could host a bake sale, carwash or get donations from your school or place of work. Then give that donation to an agency so that they can use it for services to the public! Get creative! No gift is too small!

Volunteers are needed to help us pick up food from local donors and deliver it to our partner agencies. Volunteers can make their own schedule Sunday through Friday, and use your own vehicle. This is a great individual opportunity for someone interested in operations and seeing how it all comes together to feed families! Not only will you be crucial to our behind the scenes operations, you will be ensuring that our food gets to people on time and with care!

If you play an instrument, are crafty, or creative and want to give back in a way that only you can, then consider being an enrichment teacher for underserved youth! Enrichment teachers will teach an hour class for up to 12 students. John J Duggan Academy will provide any materials needed! They will work with your schedule and this is a wonderful way to share your knowledge with kids and expand their horizons.

Do you want to make a difference in the life of a young person? Become a Big Brother or Big Sister in our Community Mentoring Program! Mentors must be 21+ years of age. You will be matched with a  youth ages 6-18 and will meet 3-5 hours per month and do fun things together in the community. Mentors are a consistent, caring adults that act as a stabilizing force in the life of a youth.

Keep clothes out of landfills and repurpose them for the community! Volunteers are needed at the Community Survival Center to assist in their thrift shop. Volunteers can choose to help sort and hang clothes, help the customers or help with the register. We are flexible and will work with you for shifts and interests.
